“On the glorious splendour of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate” (Psalm 145:5).
Recent scientific discoveries are revealing the "oneness" of the makeup of the universe. As I've read story after story about this in the media, it dawned on me that the Bible has been saying the very same thing for thousands of years!
Scientists are now demonstrating that connectedness – or oneness – is the overriding characteristic of the universe. They show that the things we perceive as separate – including you and me – are not separate all. If we are reduced to our essential elements, we are all invisible energy, manifesting in three-dimensional form. In fact, the entire universe is one vast field of invisible energy.
Biblical truth does not need outside evidence to make it valid. Nevertheless, it is striking that over the past century, discoveries have revealed a completely new scientific understanding of what you and I experience as reality.
Our universe burst into being at one particular moment in time which is generally known as the Big Bang. It exploded from a point of infinite density that was smaller than the size of a pinhead. Scientists call it the point of singularity. From the evidence of scripture, that point of singularity was – and is – the Christ: “For in him [Christ] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible” (Colossians 1:16). And furthermore, “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (1:17).
Ephesians 4:10 opened my eyes to the truth of omnipresence in a much more vivid way: “He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe” . It impelled me to look much more closely into what it means to read: “The Church is his body, and in that body lives fully the one who fills the whole wide universe” (Ephesians 1:23). This “one” is Christ, of course.
In my book God’s Gift of Tremendous Power, I use the term “quantum field” as helpful shorthand to describe the universal field of energy. The term relates to quantum (or modern) physics which is the branch of science that deals with the subatomic, most fundamental components of the universe. Scripture reveals that God is the author and creator of the entire universe. Therefore, it is God who brought into existence this quantum, or energy, field as the invisible “fabric” – so to speak – from which he fashioned his three-dimensional creation, including you and me. The invisible essence that permeates, connects and interconnects us all.
The Bible has been declaring this truth of inter-connectedness – or oneness – for over 2,000 years. Another scripture that reveals this is: “There is one body and one Spirit…one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).
Heady stuff!
Knowledge about God’s creation is not given to humankind for the sake of mere interest – and certainly not in order to “win” any aspect of the current faith-science argument. No, such knowledge is given by God with the holy and intimate purpose that his children may know him better and come into an ever closer relationship with their creator. This knowledge inspires worship and greater intimacy with God, because he communicates with humankind through his works of creation: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech” (Psalm 19).
Also, it builds faith and speaks of the immeasurable power that is available to everyone who trusts in Christ and finds their identity in him. This identity is a vital part of the Christian life, as emphasised by the many New Testament scriptures which refer to the believer’s position “in Christ” or “with Christ”, for example: “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). That is, with the Christ who fills “the whole wide universe”.
This truth is, of course, stunning, and way beyond human comprehension, but if we look to the Holy Spirit, the promise of Jesus is that the Spirit will lead us into all truth. As we meditate upon, and appropriate, the scriptures that describe our true identity in Christ, his life will increasingly flow within us and out into the world as healing and transformation.
Ann Shakespeare is the author of God’s Gift of Tremendous Power (Deep River Books) which brings together discoveries of modern physics, biblical truth and the life that is available to us in God. Its main purpose is to serve as an inspirational guide to living purposefully and fruitfully in the flow of our true identity in Christ Jesus. For more information visit annshakespeare.com
