A church elder and two other men were injured in the incident, which took place during a Sunday service at New Jerusalem Apostolic Church in Aston.
John Delahaye has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of wounding and possession of a bladed weapon.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the church said three members of its congregation were recovering well. At a service of fellowship and thanksgiving just one day after the attack, the church applauded police, paramedics and the three men who were caught up in the attack.
Counsellors were also on hand to speak with attendees. In a statement the church said: “There was a palpable resolve that this incident would not affect the community focused work, the open arms and open doors policy the church has for the community.”
