The Church is made up of Christians from a myriad of different professions, and yet their ordinary tales of God at work rarely get told. In this series, we bring you stories of faith on the frontline
My name is Millicent ‘Millie’ Grant. I am a chartered legal executive, an honorary King’s Counsel (KC) and the first Black High Sheriff for the county of Greater London. I was the first person from a minority ethnic background to lead a legal professional membership body, and I’ve worked extensively to advance diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.
The role of high sheriff, a historic position dating back to pre-Norman England, is a royal appointment recommended by the Privy Council. Originally, the high sheriff wielded extensive powers, including tax collection, law enforcement and property management for the Crown. Today, however, the position is largely ceremonial, with duties focused on supporting the justice system and associated public bodies. The appointment lasts just one year and involves voluntary work two to three days a week.
You can’t apply to become High Sheriff of Greater London. The outgoing high sheriff appoints a successor four years in advance. I was in the right place at the right time. It’s not about who you know, it’s about who knows you.
In my role, I’ve visited prisons, spoken with judges and those who work in courts. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the justice system, including the severe strain on prison services. The high sheriff has ‘convening powers’, which allow me to bring together people with influence to address issues, creating environments where I can express appreciation for their work. This can make a big difference.
The way that I approach the role is totally shaped by my faith in Jesus. It’s challenging trying to manage my other professional and personal responsibilities, and it takes time to understand different areas. But God has put me here for a purpose.
Each high sheriff is given a theme; mine is: young people, inclusion and social mobility. My goal is to offer hope and positive influence, drawing on my own experience to connect with others and contribute meaningfully.
Please pray that I can complete my year well with clear vision and adequate provision. I want to make the most of my networks and the things that I discover.
