What the Premier Christianity team are enjoying this month

For Such a Time As This - Shani Akilah (Magpie)

How refreshing to read a novel where, rather than being sneered at or ignored, the Christian faith is portrayed as a normal and important part of everyday life. Shani Akilah’s debut explores themes of friendship, romance and community among Black-British Londoners. This is not a ‘Christian novel’ (it contains bad language) but it is written by a Christian, and eagle-eyed readers will spot the biblical reference in the title. Endorsements have poured in from significant figures in the literary world, including the Booker Prize winner Bernadine Evaristo, while Marie Claire lists the book in its ‘Summer Reads’ picks.

The Rest is History podcast (Goalhanger)

The world’s most popular history podcast is always worth a listen. But the recent four-part series on the Reformer Martin Luther was especially impressive. Hosts Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland are extremely well read, and retell the story with great insight and humour. It will build your faith.

The Bear (Disney+)

Not one for anyone with high blood pressure or who is easily offended by bad language, but the latest series of The Bear is out now, and we love it! If your heartrate can survive it, it’s an honest look at addiction, family and trauma – and how great food, purpose and service can bring meaning and hope where there might not seem to be any.
