Omar Maskatiya, charts director at OCC, said, ‘The popularity of Christian and gospel music to date has largely been demonstrated through its vibrant live sector. We can now, for the first time, shine the spotlight on those artists who are enjoying significant success through recorded music too.’
More than 600 Christian and gospel albums were released in the UK last year. The biggest seller was Friar Alessandro, who became the first friar to sign a major label record deal.
Launched in partnership with the charity Compassion, the new chart is released every Monday afternoon and broadcast on Premier Christian Radio.
The first number one was ‘Zion’ by Hillsong Ltd followed by ‘Without Words’ from Bethel Music and ‘10,000 Reasons’ by Matt Redman.
