Jonny Baker is visionary and a thoroughly modern person. He has written an intriguing book with much to recommend it. Baker’s big idea is that we can learn much from the art world about the way imagination and creativity are used in exhibitions. He asks why not curate worship in a collaborative and exploratory way? And of course, at the centre is God. The introduction is rather wonderful – it puts flesh on the bones of his unusual idea and really inspires, showing how we can learn from art and really offer worship that might transform Church. Unfortunately, the remaining 160 pages are just a series of interviews with various ‘interesting’ people written up verbatim. It is very hard to read interviews in this way – we needed him to move away from the tape recorder and add much more value.
I have a feeling that Jonny Baker will write a great book, but this isn’t it.
