Marjorie, Ecuador

In the rural highlands of San Pablo, Ecuador, opportunities are scarce. For many families, daily survival overshadows dreams. Yet, in this small indigenous village, Marjorie’s story stands as a beacon of hope—a testament to the power of education, faith, and perseverance.

A dream born in adversity

Growing up in extreme poverty, Marjorie faced hunger and daily hardship. But she also carried a dream that seemed impossible: to become a nurse.

“When I told my family I wanted to study nursing, they said it would be too difficult, that I should give up,” she remembers. Despite their doubts, Marjorie held onto her dream.

The role of Compassion and the local church

At just five years old, Marjorie was registered into the Compassion sponsorship programme through her local church. This wasn’t just financial support; it was a lifeline of encouragement and faith.

When a child is enrolled in the Compassion programme,  they receive nutritional support, access to educational resources, health checks and the care of the local church.

“One of my most important memories is the pastor saying, ‘Everything is possible when you have God in your heart.’ That changed my world,” she says.

This support helped Marjorie through school—a real opportunity in rural Ecuador, especially for girls, who may be pulled from education to help at home. Marjorie persevered, completing her education against all odds. “It was hard,” she says, “but every time I wanted to give up, I thought of the people who believed in me—my church, my sponsors—and that gave me strength.”

Giving back to her community

Now, Marjorie serves as a Health Specialist at her local Compassion centre in San Pablo, teaching children about health and disease prevention. She is more than a nurse—she’s an inspiration, showing children that no dream is out of reach.

“I want to give back with grace everything I received by grace,” she says. “I know what it’s like to have nothing but faith, and I want these children to know their dreams are possible.”

Her work is changing lives.

The ripple effect of one life changed

Marjorie’s story illustrates how educating one child can transform an entire community. Through her care, children in San Pablo now have access to better health and a role model who proves that faith and education can break the cycle of poverty.

Her journey also highlights the vital role of local churches. A church offers fellowship, and becomes a hub of support, offering children the chance to dream, learn, and grow holistically.

Looking ahead

Marjorie isn’t stopping there. She’s currently pursuing a master’s degree in health and education to expand healthcare services in rural areas. Her vision is to ensure that children in villages like San Pablo have the resources they need to thrive.

“I’ll never stop telling the children in my community not to give up. God is good, and He has great plans for them, just as He did for me,” she says.
